Associated Press - March 27, 2009 8:25 AM ET PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The state Corrections Department says the average daily inmate count in South Dakota's penitentiary system has increased by 52% in the past 11 years. Corrections Secretary Tim Reisch (Rysh) says the prison population will average 3,451 inmates this year. He says the growing inmate count forces the state and local goverments to spend taxpayer money that otherwise could be diverted to other programs. Read more.
