Project increases visibility and bolsters walls BY JOHN A. TORRES • FLORIDA TODAY • March 22, 2009 Stamping out prison rape and improving visibility for corrections officers who monitor inmate activity are reasons for an ongoing million-dollar renovation at the Brevard Correctional Institution. The renovations are being funded federally through a Prison Rape Elimination Act grant to eliminate corners that block guards' views. "The grant money was sent there to help with the physical plant design because it is an old facility," George Sapp, the Florida assistant secretary for institutions, said of the 33-year-old complex. "We guard against the potential for easy opportunity by having sight lines and with physical construction and staff observation of inmates and staff in their day-to-day lives." Charles Realmuto and Chuck Gigliotti, co-founders of Imperial Building Products, used a super-strength type of drywall called DragonBoard during the renovations.
