Abington police officer Ronald Sweeney found himself in a scene often played out in movies and on TV. A cop races to the crime scene only to find one man with a gun to another’s head. He has to make split-second decisions about who the bad guy is and how to diffuse the situation without getting himself or someone else killed. Under immense pressure, Sweeney made all the right decisions, and last week he was singled out for is actions. Sweeney, who was the first officer on the scene of the slaying of Barbara Tassinari last April, has been nominated for “America’s Most Wanted” All-Star Award. Francis Scolaro, Tassinari’s brother, had called 911 on April 22 when he heard shots. He grabbed a handgun before running out of his house, which was next door to the Tassinaris’. Scolaro found his 29-year-old sister lying face down and bleeding in her driveway. He jumped on her husband, John P. Tassinari, and held him until Sweeney arrived. Read more.
