An East Jersey State Prison inmate was killed in a brawl with another prisoner. Alexander Bernstein, 31, died shortly after he and Hassan Doss, 32, began fighting in a common area around 7 a.m. Wednesday. It was not clear what sparked the brawl, which was witnessed by other prisoners, and no other injuries were reported. Chris Carden, a state Department of Corrections spokesman, would not comment on the fight or say what, if any, weapons were used by either man. A cause of death was not disclosed, but Bernstein's family said they were told he died from blunt force trauma. The brawl remains under investigation and Doss, who is serving a 20-year sentence for a 1996 aggravated assault conviction in Camden, has not yet been charged in the death. The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office will have the final say on what charges, if any, he will face. Bernstein had been paroled in 2002 after serving time for aggravated manslaughter, but was returned to prison in May 2003 after he violated his parole and was sentenced to six years for eluding police. |
