Canadian inmates raise ruckus aboard ferry

Some shackled inmates got rowdy on a public passenger ferry bound for Vancouver Island from the B.C. mainland Wednesday, breaking windows on the vehicle they were being transported in.
There were reports a small fire was lit inside the inmates' secured bus and that an alarm was triggered on the B.C. Ferry Services vessel, which left Tsawwassen for Swartz Bay at 11 a.m.
"I'm not sure what set off the alarm," said Wayne Willows, a B.C. Corrections spokesman. "I know there was for a brief moment some smoke that might have come from some paper that was lit by one of the inmates on the bus."
None of the 20 prisoners were injured and there was never any danger to the passengers or crew, said Willows.
The inmates required higher security, he said. The spokesman didn't know what particular crimes they had committed, suggesting it could range from property offences to violence.
They were accompanied by two corrections officers and kept inside a secured bus with bars on the windows in the belly of the ship. The prisoners also wore leg and hand cuffs.
Additional corrections officers and police met the ship at Swartz Bay.
The inmates' vehicle was first off the ship and there was no delay to passengers, said Willows.
Some of the prisoners may have been unhappy about being transferred to Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre, he suggested.
