| Monroe County Prison Board is in no hurry to hire warden |

SNYDERSVILLE — The Monroe County Prison Board hasn't yet sought to fill its warden vacancy and has no immediate plan to do so, preferring a go-slow approach. "We have not advertised it," said Monroe County Commissioner Donna Asure, who also chairs the prison board. "We have not talked about it as a board, so we have not moved forward as a board on the search." Former warden David Mauro and former Capt. Owen Thomas submitted resignations March 11, retroactive to their suspensions Feb. 27 related to a disparaging remark Thomas allegedly uttered in public to Mauro about another corrections officer. The Monroe County Correctional Facility is operating with vacancies in its top three positions. The fourth-ranking officer, director of treatment Garry McFarland, is overseeing daily operations. Mauro, who previously worked at a prison in Morris County, N.J., was the fourth Monroe County warden in less than two years. Thomas, and previous Monroe County warden Marlene Chamblee, both held high-ranking titles at the Rikers Island detention center in New York City. Some have argued those previous administrators at the Snydersville jail didn't possess the administrative experience needed to operate a county prison in Pennsylvania. Their previous duties emphasized supervisory functions more than administration. "The last people we brought in we didn't have a clear idea of what their qualifications needed to be and how to match it," Asure said. "We don't want to make another mistake." Since the Mauro and Thomas resignations, Asure has spent several days at the Snydersville jail. Asure said she has had numerous conversations with prison employees, trying to learn as much as possible about the facility and its needs. Read more.
