| Prison to get more crowded |

A new tough-on-crime sentencing measure approved by Oregon voters is expected to add 1,600 inmates to the state's prison population by 2013, according to a state report issued Wednesday. Measure 57, which took effect Jan. 1, couples longer sentences for non-violent property and drug offenders with drug and alcohol treatment for such inmates. Currently, Oregon's prison system has about 13,765 inmates. The new sentencing provisions will cause the inmate population to grow significantly in coming years, according to state analysts. "Without the effects of Measure 57, the population would be expected to grow at an annual rate of 2 to 3 percent through mid-2010, with growth slowing to less than 1 percent in the outer years of the forecast," concludes a report by the state Office of Economic Analysis. "With the effects of Measure 57, growth is expected to exceed 5 percent through mid-2011, while gradually returning to baseline growth in the outer years for the forecast." Read more.
