Smoot named Deputy of Year

FRONT ROYAL -- Whether it was a little luck or an acute knack for sniffing out suspicious activity, Patrol Deputy W. Allen Smoot proved his worth to the Warren County Sheriff's Office on more than a few occasions last year.

One example of Smoot's accomplishments from 2008 is a permanent fixture in his memory. He said he did a routine traffic stop one day on a vehicle towing a trailer containing four-wheelers, items that were later determined to be stolen. After further inquiries and help from other deputies, Smoot traced the stolen property back to a shoplifting ring and home arson. The incident led to 15 separate cases being solved.

It's that kind of initiative that Sheriff Daniel T. McEathron says proves Smoot shows drive and initiative in his work, and the deputy's efforts have been rewarded by the Front Royal American Legion.

The American Legion recently gave Smoot its Deputy of the Year award in honor of his work for the Sheriff's Office. In a phone interview Thursday night, Smoot was a man of few words, but expressed his appreciation.

"I felt honored that I was picked by my peers," he said. "The main thing [that I enjoy] is the people that we work with. That's a good group of guys in the sheriff's office."

Smoot, who resides in Front Royal with his wife and two children, said he primarily serves as an officer-in-charge on his shift. When the sergeant is absent, he also assumes responsibility for supervision of that shift.

Smoot, who joined the Sheriff's Office as a corrections officer in 1997, also serves as a field training officer for other patrol deputies. Smoot was promoted to corrections sergeant before moving to the Patrol Division in 2006 as an animal control officer. The 35-year-old police veteran became a patrol deputy in 2007.
