| Over 4,500 prisoners walk from Tihar Jail |

New Delhi (PTI): More than 4,500 prisoners -- first time offenders, old, sick and infirms -- have walked free from Tihar Jail here, courtesy special courts that are helping the overcrowded prisons to shed some of its weight. A total of 4,570 prisoners have got relief from the special courts which are a monthly affair in the Tihar jail since May 2000, a senior jail official said. Last month, 100th such court was held in which cases of 41 prisoners were disposed off out of 49 taken by it, he said. This year, the court has disposed 84 cases till March. Presently, over 11,500 prisoners are languishing in Delhi jails for various offences in comparison to its capacity of just 6,250. Read more.
