NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the nation’s largest provider of corrections management services to federal, state and local government, announced today that it has received from the Office of the Federal Detention Trustee (OFDT) final approval for activation of the Nevada Southern Detention Center.

CCA was awarded the contract by OFDT in May 2008 to design, build and operate the new correctional facility located in Pahrump, Nevada, approximately 65 miles outside of Las Vegas.

CCA anticipates constructing the 1,072-bed detention center, which will house federal inmates and detainees for the United States Marshals Service, beginning in June 2009, following the implementation of the federal Biological Opinion on the property at 2250 E. Mesquite Avenue. CCA anticipates receiving federal detainees in the fourth quarter of 2010.

“During this challenging economic time, we are gratified to bring positive news to Nevada residents regarding the creation of immediate construction jobs and upcoming full-time professional correctional careers,” said Damon Hininger, CCA president. “Even during these uncertain times, CCA continues providing a needed public service with pride.”

Tony Grande, CCA chief development officer, said, “We are very grateful for the strong show of support these past months from elected officials, local business and community leaders and Pahrump residents. CCA is fully committed to being a strong community partner, and we believe the taxpayers in Nye County quickly will grow to respect us and be proud of our presence in this thriving county.”

Grande added that once the facility is operational, CCA will be one of the largest employers in the county, with more than 230 employees. “These jobs will offer a very attractive federal wage determination salary and benefits. In addition to the career opportunities CCA will bring, the company will stimulate the local economy by paying more than $800,000 annually in property taxes, more than $900,000 annually in utilities and will be supporting the community with college scholarships and donations to specific non-profit organizations.”

Grande noted that the contractor, DCK Worldwide, anticipates spending approximately $7 million with Pahrump subcontractors and material purchases, such as concrete, aggregate and asphalt.

CCA anticipates hosting an official groundbreaking ceremony for the local community, but that date has not yet been determined.

In regard to career recruitment, the company does not anticipate hiring employees until mid-2010. For career information, visit www.ccajob.com.

The company has produced a website containing information on CCA’s presence in communities. A dedicated section of www.ccacommunities.com has been produced for the Nye County, Nevada community and includes information on the hiring qualifications demanded by the U.S. Marshals Service.
