| Inmate with TB may have been exposed |

SAN DIEGO – As many as 2,000 inmates and 100 correctional and court employees may have been exposed to an inmate who had tuberculosis while in two different jails in San Diego, county health officials said Wednesday. An inmate diagnosed with tuberculosis was housed at the central jail in downtown San Diego from Jan. 4 to Jan. 8, and at the George Bailey Detention Facility in Otay Mesa from Jan. 8 to March 11, Dr. Wilma Wooten, county public health officer, said in a written statement. The inmate was returned to the downtown jail on March 11, and the diagnosis of tuberculosis was made the next day, said Dr. Kathleen Moser, director of the county's tuberculosis control services. Most people who are exposed to tuberculosis do not develop the disease, Moser said. “Generally, I would not classify TB as highly infectious,” Moser said, adding that “even with the closest exposure, not everyone who is exposed gets infected.” The county is notifying people who may have been exposed to the inmate, and issued the alert in an attempt to reach as many people as possible, including jail visitors.
