| Prison union OKs contract with state |

WALLA WALLA -- The Teamsters Union that represents state prison employees has announced that members have approved a new contract with the state. The new agreement "brings job security and language improvements, but no new wage increases," Paul Zilly, communications coordinator for Local 117, said in a release. Members approved the labor agreement by a vote of 1,670-158, Zilly said. The final tally was counted Monday after three days of telephone and Internet voting, followed by a day of voting in person at 13 correctional institutions across the state. The contract proposal had been recommended for approval by the union bargaining committee and by other rank-and-file union leaders at a Local 117 shop stewards' seminar March 6. Zilly said highlights of the new contract include the ability for bargaining unit members to transfer more easily between institutions, tolling of accrued seniority for individuals who leave the bargaining unit and enhanced seniority rights. Local 117 Secretary-Treasurer Tracey Thompson said "that while the vote shows that our members are willing to make sacrifices during an economic crisis" the union will continue to oppose reductions in the DOC's budget proposed by the Legislature and the governor.
