New Way To Settle Jail Dispute

The battle over who should pay to house inmates in the Sedgwick County Jail could heat up once again.

The jail fees dispute between the county and its cities began late last year. While it's now tied up in court, the county is trying a new tactic to make sure cities can't bail out on their bills in the future.

Currently, the rules say the county can either tax cities to help pay for jail use or send them a bill. Some cities claim the county has done both, and is in effect double-charging citizens. The county disagrees and a court is trying to sort it all out.

To make sure it's crystal clear in the future, the county is looking to give up its taxing authority to force cities that keep inmates there to send a check. Commissioners will talk about it Wednesday morning.
