| Budget cuts should spare inmates children |

In a tough economy like this, government budget-writers are predictably taking a hard look at every expense, every program, every tax and fee they can imagine to help make ends meet. As they go about their grim survey, they should strive hard to protect services for those least able to help themselves. By that measure, a program linking state prison inmates with their children and families should not be on the chopping block. We encourage the state Senate to restore the program director's position to the state budget and thereby save the program too. The Family Connections Center teaches convicts to be better parents. Some have had only limited time with their children. Some have never before read to them, changed a diaper, signed a school permission slip, or just sat around and talked to their own children. The program helps couples communicate and keeps children connected to their fathers during their incarceration. In a year where many worthy government programs will face cuts or elimination, we can appreciate that prison inmates will not be the most sympathetic constituency - in the eyes of the public or the Legislature.
