| Sheriff’s dept moving to fill positions |

The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Department is moving forward with filling some jobs left open through a series of retirements, but is expecting to see a budget cut in its secondary road patrol. Sheriff Jack Welsh said he was told that he was going to lose funding for salary and benefits for two road patrol officers during the last quarter of the state’s fiscal year. The sheriff’s department is “not going to get reimbursed for their wages and benefits,” he said. Welsh said he doesn’t know yet how that’s going to affect the sheriff’s department. “We have to figure it out,” he said, adding he needs to talk to the county commissioners. “We have the money in our personnel budget, but have to get their permission to transfer it.” The budget does have a carry-over amount for those two officers, which Welsh said the department might be able to use to cover the lost revenue. Despite the expected budget cut, other positions have either already been filled or will be filled. Detective Robert Wolverton’s job was filled by Detective Dale Sharp, who was promoted from the road patrol, Welsh said. Sharp had to go through testing and an oral board, he said. Wolverton retired at the end of June, ending a 39-year career. Sharp’s former position remains open. “I haven’t decided how we’re going to handle that yet,” Welsh said. Detective David Seeburger retired earlier this year after 35 1/2 years at the sheriff’s department. Welsh said filling his spot is a promotional procedure that requires oral boards and interviews.
