DANNEMORA, N.Y. -- New York state employees are worried about the budget deficit and its effect on possible layoffs. A group of correctional officers celebrated on Saturday labor leaders and the 30th anniversary of a strike. In 1979, New York state corrections officers went on strike for 16 days for better pay and working conditions. As correctional officers paid tribute to the anniversary, some said Saturday they had their own concerns about the current economic crisis, NewsChannel 5's Ashe Reardon said. "It's just a way to commemorate what happened in 1979, to remember it. You can't forget what happened in 1979," said Pat Buckley, a correctional officer. Corrections officers joined in solidarity on a cold Saturday to celebrate the 30th anniversary of an historic strike. "Let's face it, if they hadn't gone on strike back then, we wouldn't have the working conditions that we've got today. There would be a lot less pay than what we're getting; it wouldn't have improved like it did," said Mike Bessan, a correctional officer. Read more.
