Funding For El Paso: Taxpayers Benefit

EL PASO COUNTY - A new agreement between the sheriff's office and ICE has allowed Sheriff Terry Maketa to lease space in the jail to hold illegal aliens.

Faced with budget cuts, Sheriff Maketa has found a way to generate thousands of dollars in revenue every month by taking on additional inmates at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.

He says the additional revenue goes right back into the sheriff's office budget and benefits taxpayers.

"We're benefiting at a time where the county is struggling," Sheriff Terry Maketa says.

The jail can hold around 150 illegal aliens at a time. In return, ICE pays the sheriff's office $62.40 per inmate, everyday. In addition, the sheriff receives reimbursement for transporting illegal aliens. The sheriff says it's a win-win situation for his office and taxpayers.

"Essentially, it reduces the burden on the local taxpayers, and it reduces the burden on ICE."
