In tough economic times people are not able splurge as they would when money earned is flowing at a steady pace higher then what is required to maintain a modicum of life. This means that people have less money and MUST tighten their belts as prices for goods and services become less affordable. The Florida government however thinks in the opposite direction. Instead of tightening their belts and helping the people save some money, they released a budget proposal full of increased spending. Where is this new money going to come from? The proposal includes:

  • Increase funding for K-12 students by over 43% (that’s more then $2087 per student)
  • Increase of 7% tuition for college students
  • Adding a new Board of Trustees for each state University causing increase in University budgets to swell by as much as 15%
  • Increase Medicare matching rate and increase in cost for a variety of other medical programs
  • Fully funds the Low-Income Pool, Disproportionate Share and Hospital Exemptions Programs
  • An additional $11.5 million in Federal stimulus for Individuals with Disabilities Programs
  • A 20.4 % increase for early intervention services for infants and toddlers
  • A $42.3 million budget increase for the Dept of Children and Families
  • A $18.8 million budget increase for the Persons with Disabilities Agency
  • A $334.2 million budget increase for the Department of Elder Affairs
