| Closing Guilford Prison Would Cost Jobs |

MCLEANSVILLE, N.C. - Guilford County Prison Superintendent James Lacewell fears Gov. Bev Perdue's plan to close some of the state's prisons overlooks the rehabilitation and work that go on among inmates. "A lot of times, we like to lock them up and forget about them," he said Friday, "But the truth of the matter is something is happening to them while they are here." Lacewell points to programs and volunteers that help inmates use the time they spend in prison to turn their lives around. Those programs include Leash on Life, which allows inmates to train rescued dogs for new families, and the prison work program. "There are quite a few employers who depend on these guys," he said.
