Hall wants old jail appraised

GAINESVILLE - Hall County Commissioners agreed Monday to seek a professional appraisal on the old jail property in Gainesville’s Midtown on Main Street.

Commissioner Billy Powell proposed getting the appraisal after Vice Chairman Ashley Bell said he wanted the city/county controversy surrounding the jail resolved by the end of the summer. Chairman Tom Oliver selected Powell and Bell to report back on the appraisal in 30 days.

“This takes the all the politics out of it in coming up with a price,” Powell said. “It takes emotions out of it and establishes a true value of that asset and let’s see where it falls.”

City Council members are displeased with the county’s decision to go ahead with leasing the old jail to Corrections Corporation of America after supposedly advising Council to hold off on a contract to buy the jail for $4-million.

County Attorney Bill Blalock told county commissioners again Monday he issued no such instructions either verbally or in writing. Council members wanted to lease the jail and then close it and remove it from Midtown to pave the way for commercial redevelopment. They grew upset when they learned razor wire at the facility would remain in place as a security measure. Part of that renovation, according to the county, is to plant vegetation and trees to cover the razor wire.
