Old Bay County Jail Demolition Begins

The old Bay County Jail is on its way down.

The demolition was an historic moment for the county.

Swing by swing and piece by piece the old jail is being broken apart.

Bay County Commissioner Jerry Girvin said, "It's time for it to go and time for something more useful to be there."

Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen said, "After they built the jail that we're tearing down I actually worked in that jail for quite a period of time. Now we've got another jail. I don't know how well I've done in my career but I've survived two jails."

Surprisingly the wrecking ball wasn't knocking down the building as quickly as everyone thought it would.

Girvin added, "I've got to admit seeing a thousand pound ball go into and not see much happen I was nervous there for a moment."
