City Council sets public hearing tonight

If you live in Fredericksburg, you can tell your local government tonight how to spend your money.

City Council members will hold a public hearing on the budget proposal for the fiscal year that begins July 1 at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

City officials have called this the most difficult budget a Fredericksburg council has had to work with in 15 years.

Just like its neighbors, Fredericksburg is seeing declining tax revenues due to the economic recession. The city's sales tax revenue has also been dealt a blow by the development of retail shopping centers in Spotsylvania and Stafford counties that have pulled consumers away from Central Park.

The proposed budget for next year would take city spending back to 2006 levels. Some of the more controversial elements of the proposed plan include:

A proposed 3-cent increase in the real estate tax rate. Council members have given themselves room to take the rate as high as 61 cents per $100 of assessed value, but they have not yet reached a consensus.
