Inmate says jail officers beat him

Sheriff's deputies are investigating an inmate's claims that he was beaten and sexually assaulted at the Metropolitan Detention Center in New Mexico last Wednesday night.
"The allegation was made, and we're taking it very seriously," Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White said. "We have started an investigation to see if the claim is, in fact, true."
The inmate, a 25-year-old man who was booked into the jail Wednesday afternoon on a probation violation stemming from a domestic violence case, said that guards beat and sexually assaulted him.
Jail officials could not be reached for comment on the allegations last Thursday afternoon.
The man, whose name was not released by the Sheriff's Department because of the sexual assault allegations, is being held in the detention center's infirmary, jail records state.
The man's probation violation led a judge to issue a hold on the inmate, which means he cannot post bond to be released from the facility, according to jail records.
During the same time the man reported that he had been sexually assaulted, jail officials reported that he was strip-searched and was found to be hiding drugs, court records state.
The inmate's allegation marks the second time during the past two months that officers at the jail have been accused of abusing inmates.
On Feb. 24, at least 11 officers were filmed on detention center surveillance videotapes beating three inmates transferred from the Valencia County jail. The inmates were struck for 17 minutes and emerged with extensive bruises and cuts on their torsos and faces. Five officers were fired, one resigned and five others face administrative hearings. The group also may face criminal charges pending the completion of an investigation by the FBI, Sheriff's Department and District Attorney's Office.
