Brian Rooney and Christopher Williams were among 16 inmates who boarded a secure prisoner-transport bus Wednesday at the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield for the 20-hour, nonstop ride to Mason, Tenn., Corrections Commissioner Andy Pallito confirmed Thursday. The West Tennessee Detention Facility is the more secure of two privately operated, out-of-state prisons to which the Corrections Department sends inmates to ease crowding in Vermont facilities, Pallito said. Inmates with lengthy sentences typically serve their time beyond Vermont's borders, the commissioner said. Rooney and Williams each received terms of life without of parole. "They're going to be housed out of state for probably most of their careers," Pallito said. Rooney, 38, formerly of Richmond, abducted, raped and asphyxiated Michelle Gardner-Quinn, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Vermont from Arlington, Va., in October 2006. A jury convicted him in May 2008. He maintains his innocence, and an appeal is pending before the Vermont Supreme Court. Read more.
