A Milwaukee County (Wisc.) sheriff's deputy has been accused of sexually assaulting a female inmate in a jury restroom in a case similar to one in which he was acquitted four years ago. Delano L. Terrell, 42, was charged April 29 in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with second-degree sexual assault and misconduct in public office. He has also been put on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation, according to a Sheriff's Department news release. Terrell had been assigned to bailiff duty in Circuit Judge John McCormick's court since September 1998, sheriff's spokeswoman Kim Brooks said. Those assigned to such duty are responsible for bringing inmates from jail and holding cells into court for their hearings. A 21-year-old woman, who was in the Milwaukee House of Correction awaiting sentencing for her role in a drive-by shooting, was put on a bus to appear in McCormick's courtroom Feb. 24, according to the criminal complaint. But it said she did not have a court date then and Terrell took her alone into the bathroom of a jury room, locked the door and told the woman, "I would fall in love with you, but I'm too old." Terrell then removed the woman's handcuffs, took off her prison clothes and assaulted her before recuffing her and saying she should not tell anyone about the incident, the complaint said. He was accused in the 2000 case of kissing an inmate and removing her shirt, then exposing himself on a courthouse elevator. A jury acquitted Terrell of fourth-degree sexual assault and misconduct in office after his attorney challenged the woman's account of the assault. |
