| Panel Votes To Keep State Prison Open |

CARSON CITY, Nev. -- A key legislative budget panel voted as expected Tuesday to reject Gov. Jim Gibbons' recommendation and keep the old Nevada State Prison, which dates to the 1870s, open for the next two years. Closure of the prison in Carson City was among several cost-cutting plans questioned previously by members of the Senate-Assembly budget subcommittee as they worked on state spending priorities for the next two fiscal years. The subcommittee also voted to keep open the state Department of Corrections' Tonopah prison camp, which houses inmates who help fight wildfires throughout Nevada. Read more.
