| Merced County sheriff suspends visitation |

Visitation at the Merced County jail facilities has been temporarily halted by Sheriff Mark Pazin over concerns of the swine flu outbreak. Pazin said that taking this temporary proactive measure will ensure not only the safety of the correctional and medical staff, but that of the inmates as well. Pazin said that he recognizes and apologizes for any inconvenience that this visitation cancellation may cause, but added that he wanted to be on "the safe side rather than risk possible contamination." There have been no outbreaks of the virus at either jail facilities in Merced County and this is purely a precautionary measure, the sheriff said. Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department spokesman Deputy Royjindar Singh said there were no plans to halt visitations at any of the jail facilities in Stanislaus County. Read more.
