| Corrections director worries about budget |

A 5 percent funding reduction would mean deep cuts in services to adult offenders on probation with Saline County Community Corrections, Director Annie Grevas told Saline County commissioners Tuesday. Grevas said she was asked by the Kansas Department of Corrections to submit two budgets for fiscal 2010 -- one with no increase in funding and one with a 5 percent cut in funding. Cuts might be necessary as state lawmakers are facing tax revenue estimates for fiscal 2010 that are $500 million lower than estimates made in November. Commissioners voted to approve the budgets, but final approval comes from the Department of Corrections, which allocates funding to all community corrections programs in the state. The full budget of $905,000 for adult offender services for Saline and Ottawa counties "includes a lot of dollars for offender services, mental health and substance abuse, transportation and housing," Grevas said.
