LANCASTER - Warden Mark Saunders listed an inventory of characteristics that make Greg Thrapp worthy of the title Southeastern Correctional Institute's Correction Officer of the Year.
Among those reported traits: Thrapp cares about his community. He's knowledgeable about his job. And he's filled to the brim with common sense - an important quality to have as a correction officer.
Saunders said Thrapp, a member of the Special Response Team, excels under pressure. He also is commander of the SCI Honor Guard and the arsenal officer at the institution.
"He doesn't get in a lot of situations where he's put in harm's way because he's good at what he does," Saunders said.
Thrapp joined Southeastern Correctional Institution in 1997 as a correction officer. He said it was a surprise to receive the award - one given to an exceptional correction officer each year.
"I was humbled," he said. "There's so many great staff and other officers that work at the institution. Many of them I was competing against for the award.
"I'm grateful for the award, and I'm going to do my best to represent our institution throughout the year."
Thrapp, 35, was selected by a majority vote of the nearly 200 corrections officers at the prison.
"He's a great team player and will always support fellow staff members," said Maj. Arden Nichols, Thrapp's direct supervisor.
"You have to be a good multi-tasker in this position," Nichols said. "He always goes above what is expected of him."
A Logan High School alumni, Thrapp graduated and entered the U.S. Air Force. He enlisted from 1993 to 1996, serving during Operation Desert Storm in Iraq before being honorably discharged.
From there, he went on to his position at SCI upon recommendation of a friend. Thrapp now coaches track in Logan, where his two children go to school.
His most rewarding accomplishment comes from being a member of the prison's Honor Guard and working with different organizations such as the Veterans Administration, Ohio READS program and Special Wish Foundation.
"There's so many things our team is affiliated with to make a good, positive impression on the public," Thrapp said. "That's probably one of things I'm most proud of is being out in the public eye." Read more.
