GRAFTON — Two Lorain County corrections officers, one from Grafton Correctional Institution and one from Lorain Correctional Institution, are in the running to be the top corrections officer in Ohio. The winner will be announced today.
Anthony Lawrence, a former probation officer in Richland County and former arena football player for the Dayton Hawks, was chosen as the top officer at Grafton Correctional Institution, and Ralph Lloyd was selected as the top corrections officer at Lorain Correctional Institution. They were picked by their peers for their leadership, dedication and commitment.
Lawrence began his career as a corrections officer with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction in June 2000 at Mansfield Correctional Institution. He transferred to Grafton in September 2002.
He has been a member of the Special Response Team since 2005, serving as the chemical munitions instructor, baton instructor and unarmed self-defense instructor at both the institutional and state level. He also is a volunteer union member-organizer and an on-the-job trainer.
He participates in the National Public Safety Officers Football League, playing for the Cleveland Warriors. The team raises money for the Ronald McDonald House, the American Cancer Society and a scholarship fund for children of veterans disabled or killed in action.
Lawrence also serves as a volunteer coordinator for Elyria Youth Professional Athletic Association tournaments, which feature self defense and martial arts for kids.
Lawrence, who said he was an at-risk youth, said winning the award would give him more opportunities to help at-risk teens.
“I got out of the community and had an opportunity for something better,” he said.
Lloyd began his corrections career in 1994 and takes on a number of roles at Lorain Correctional.
“It’s an honor to be selected as officer of the year by my fellow co-workers,” Lloyd said.
He is chief negotiator for the Hostage Negotiation Team and is a crisis-negotiation instructor.
Described as “a true team player,” he also serves as a coach and mentor for new corrections officers Read more.
