| Roane Co. jail needs new employees |

The new Roane County jail is just about a month away from opening. Its opening will solve the overcrowding problems that have plagued the existing jail and kept it from being certified by the Tennessee Corrections Institute. But where one problem will disappear, another has yet to be solved: the issue of staffing. Sheriff Jack Stockton enjoys showing off the county's new high-tech jail. He gave a tour to Rotary Club members from Kingston, Harriman, and Rockwood on Thursday. The more than 38,000 square foot facility has five dormitories, security cameras everywhere, and an advanced control room where jail staff will oversee every aspect of keeping inmates in line. But just how many staff members will run the facility is still undecided. "After meeting with the jail inspector [Wednesday], he determined...if the minimum requirements are going to be met, that we'd need an additional 12 full-time staff to run the facility," said Stockton. Stockton said those 12 new jobs -- in addition to his 22 current staff members -- are necessary to meet state certification standards. However, getting the County Commission's approval for those new jobs could be a tough task. "It's going to be a big operation, a good operation, but we want it to be done as efficiently as possible and at as less cost as possible," said Commissioner James Harmon. Harmon said the money for that many new employees simply may not be there. "We're just going to have to find a way to make it work economically," Harmon said. "Anytime you add employees or pick up a new project or are spending taxpayer money, it is a concern for the County Commission, and I totally understand that," Stockton said.
