Possible swine flu cases hit Louisiana and New Orleans Several possible cases of swine flu have now been documented in the state of Louisiana, with one coming from an 8-year-old boy in New Orleans. The boy tested positive for Type A virus, which could be the swine flu. The sample has been sent to Atlanta, GA to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for further testing because we do not have the kits available locally to test for this new virus. The boy attends Audubon Charter School in Uptown New Orleans. The school notified all parents of the school of the boy testing positive for Type A virus Thursday afternoon and evening via telephone calls. Five of the samples sent to the CDC for verification came from Lafayette, LA and were from 5 sixth graders. The remaining two samples came from St. Martin Parish and St. Tammany Parish. Results will be back from the CDC in two to four days.
The Louisiana Office of Public Health has been sent test kits to test for the Type A virus and information on the swine flu went out to all parish governments. A vaccine has yet to be developed for the swine flu but is in progress. The vaccine should be available by the end of the month. The World Health Organization raised the pandemic level to 5 yesterday, one level away from an epidemic. Individuals can take precautions against contracting the virus by washing hands often with soap and water, avoiding crowds, and by using alcohol based hand sanitizers. Read more.
