SWINE FLU UPDATE: No jail visits this weekend

Kern County’s jails will be closed to visitors at least through this weekend to prevent the spread of swine flu, the sheriff’s department announced late Friday morning.
There are no confirmed or suspected cases of the flu in any of the jails, but the county is taking no chances, according to a release by the department.
The decision was made in consultation with the Kern County Health Department, the release said.
It affects all jails in the county.
The sheriff’s department will reassess the situation next week to determine whether to extend the ban on visitors.
The release says the county wants to:
• Allow time to fully assess the potential threat posed to the jail facilities by the Swine Flu.
• To prevent or limit the potential for exposure of the inmate population to the virus in the event that the virus arrives in Kern County.
• To protect the public by preventing the gathering of large groups of people at Sheriff’s detentions facilities that often occur during weekend visiting. Read more.
