| Lawrence County supplements jail medical budget |

DEADWOOD – The Lawrence County Commission on Tuesday set aside another $100,000 for its jail inmate medical budget. The county originally budgeted $50,000 for prisoner medical care for 2009. However, that amount didn't last one-third of the year. Just after the first of the year, an inmate required intensive care at Rapid City Regional Hospital for nearly four weeks. "It's extremely expensive," county Sheriff Rick Mowell said. "That's the way life is in the jail sometimes. There are 45 inmates in the jail every day, and we have people who sometimes are not in the best of health." The county and its taxpayers are responsible for paying all prisoner medical expenses, which include vision and dental care and major medical procedures and medications. Meade County operates the other jail in the Northern Hills and has spent about $15,000 of its $50,000 jail medical expense budget, according to the county auditor. Read more.
