Corrections officer William Hesson dies at Cuyahoga County Juvenile Correctional Facility after incident with youth Saturday, May 02, 2009 Rachel Dissell - Plain Dealer Reporter A 39-year-old corrections officer at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Correctional Facility in Highland Hills died Wednesday after an incident with a youth, according to the Department of Youth Services. The department has not released any further details on what led up to William Hesson's death or what his injuries were, pending Cuyahoga County Coroner Frank Miller's ruling. The State Highway Patrol is investigating and was interviewing staff and youths at the facility Friday. Hesson, of North Canton, who had worked at the facility only a few months, was rushed to a hospital and died soon after he arrived. Advertisement He was "highly respected and very professional," said Sally Meckling, a spokeswoman for the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association. Meckling said the union is increasingly concerned about factors that are contributing to a volatile environment in juvenile detention facilities, including a large inmate fight and the assault of a female officer in a cell, both at a center in Marion this month. She believes an unchecked gang problem throughout the system and the impending closing of the Marion facility -- which houses high-risk offenders -- are leading to disruption and injury to staff. All youths in state correctional facilities are being reclassified, and many are being sent to facilities with different levels of supervision. The reclassification is being done as part of a settlement of a lawsuit that challenged conditions in Youth Services facilities. Read more. I'm A JCO @ Marion Juvenile and my heart & prayers go out to the family of Mr. Hesson. The man was obviously just trying to make A living and from what I understand was very well liked and respected. I sit on units 8 sometimes 16 hours and listen to these youth talk of how easy it is to assault staff and get away with it. Just 2 nights ago I listened to a youth his exact words were,"I slapped that bitch ass guard and he just stood there, cuz he knows he cant touch me" someplace down the line these felon youths rights have become more impotant then the saftey of the guards putting in long hours to watch these youth there consequences are not even close to what they deserve! Its to bad it took the death of A JCO for them to take A look at DYS..I hope they reconsider the closure of Marion and put these youth that belong behind the doors!! I Believe the old saying the Punishment should fit the crime these youth are not punished, there just given more rights!!!!
