| Prison inmates complain of flu restrictions in Mexico |

MEXICO CITY (dpadpa) — Eight people were injured Friday as inmates of a Mexico City jail clashed among themselves, while relatives of the prisoners complained outside the facilities over flu-related restrictions on visits. Prison authorities said the incident was not a mutiny, but merely a clash among inmates. Police, using helmets and shields, established a security cordon around the Reclusorio Norte. Outside the jail, relatives awaited news of the incident. “Imagine the families’ anxiety after seeing what was happening inside,’’ one man told television. “We are upset because they have cancelled the visit one week and they could extend that even more.’’ The families explained, for example, that they need to give cash to the inmates so they can avoid being beaten up by the guards inside the jail, and that each inmate is required to pay 30 cents to get by each roll-calling session unhurt. Visits on Tuesday and Thursday were cancelled to avoid the spread of the new variant of influenza, A(H1N1), that has so far left 15 dead in Mexico — among over 150 dead of flu more generally. These restrictions are part of broader measures undertaken by the authorities, including the suspension of school and university lessons across the country, the cancellation of mass events and the ban on Mexico City restaurants from selling food on their premises. Mexico City’s Human Rights Commission supported the temporary suspension of jail visits imposed by city authorities. The restriction was set to be lifted next week. Read more.
