Prisons honor employees, remember colleagues BY ASHLEY PHILLIPS • Gazette Staff Writer • May 5, 2009 Remembering fallen colleagues and celebrating achievements and milestones marked a pair of ceremonies at Chillicothe Correctional and Ross Correctional facilities Monday. Advertisement Quantcast There ceremonies were conducted in conjunction with Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections Employee Week. CHILLICOTHE CORRECTIONAL Remembering former workers who lost their lives, Robert Horton, of the Special Response Team, talked about co-worker Dave Gibson, who died in an auto accident on March 31. "Dave was devoted to his career and he was a great man," he said. Horton said Gibson became his mentor, and the staff lost a great man. And while the institution honored Gibson's memory, it also marked the theme "Let's Celebrate," under which Warden Robin Knab pointed out how hard the staff works and her pride in its efforts. Mayor Joe Sulzer emphasized the value of public service employees to the community. "This is not an easy job, but the people do it in an admirable fashion," he said. Former CCI warden Art Tate, during his keynote address, told attendees CCI is one of the best places he has worked. Tate retired from the ODRC in 2001 after serving in many positions, including warden of several prisons. "This is a tough business, but CCI has always had a good environment," he said. ROSS CORRECTIONAL RCI started honoring its employees with a 5:30 a.m. celebration breakfast. Warden Michael Sheets told attendees that while there have been trying times within ODRC's budget, he is proud of how his staff has continued to do its best. "I just want you to know that I appreciate all that you do day after day," he said. The facility's corrections officer of the year, Daniel Harness, said he was excited to receive the award for the second time. "I just want to thank everyone who voted for me. I respect everyone. It takes a lot to do this job, and I'm honored to get this award," he said. Just six months away from his 30th year anniversary with ODRC, Rodney Younker said he was honored to receive the prison's employee of the year award. "We really appreciate everything that Rodney does," Sheets said. Approaching retirement, Younker said he is going to miss coming to work and interacting with his co-workers. Still, there are perks to retirement. "I'm looking forward to spending time with my granddaughters and relaxing," he said. Read more.
