By JIM SAUNDERS -Tallahassee Bureau Chief
TALLAHASSEE -- In a solemn ceremony Monday, Gov. Charlie Crist and police from across the state honored Tomoka Correctional Institution Officer Donna Fitzgerald and seven other law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty last year.
The Fraternal Order of Police held its annual police memorial service on the steps of the Old Capitol, near a monument that includes the names of officers who have died on the job.
Crist called public safety the "most important reason government exists."

Fitzgerald, 50, was stabbed to death June 25 as she worked in a prison-industry program. Inmate Enoch Donnell Hall, 40, was arrested in the death and is awaiting trial.Read more.
