Laurel County Jail Needs More Funds Reporter: Matt Barbour - wymtnews.com Officials in one county say their jail is almost out of money, and they need a half million dollars to make it to the end of the fiscal year on June 30th. Laurel County Judge Executive Lawrence Kuhl today says it is a combination of factors when it comes to the Laurel County Detention Center's budget deficit. He says it is going to be tough to fulfill Jailer Jack Sizemore's request of $500,000 to keep the detention center operational. "Last year it was $254,000 in the month of June that we had to come up with to try and get him through. It's a problem not only here in our jail, but every jail," said Kuhl. He says while a majority of inmates are local, jails across the state are picking up the tab when it comes to housing state and federal inmates, which are the county's responsibility until conviction. He says several counties are asking the state for reimbursement. "We're asking that the state go back and reimburse the counties throughout the state, which are millions and millions of dollars," he said. Besides housing state and federal inmates, Kuhl says a large portion of the funds goes to helping inmates with their medical problems. "Sometimes their conditions are so bad and so terminal, that we have to take them to the emergency room or the hospital," said Kuhl. Which he says adds up quickly. He says the county is also analyzing the center's spending, saying over the past 28 months, employees have been paid nearly $600,000 dollars.Read more.
