Hunt begins for DRC director
By PAMELA BRUST
PARKERSBURG - Wood County commissioners voted Thursday to withdraw an earlier order to hire Michael Simmons to serve as the new Community Corrections Day Report Center director, and authorized the DRC board to again advertise for the position. Last week, the commission conducted a 35-minute executive session with Sheriff Jeff Sandy and the prosecutor, after which the commission authorized additional employment background checks be done on Simmons, who had been approved as the new DRC director. Also last week, the commissioners delayed the employment start date for Simmons from April 20 to April 27, "pending further background investigation," according to the motion made by Commissioner Blair Couch, who also serves as president of the DRC board. Earlier this month, the commissioners approved the hiring of Simmons, a former Pennsylvania law enforcement officer, to serve as the new DRC director. At that time, county officials said a criminal background check and reference check had been performed on Simmons. On a motion made by Couch on Thursday, the commissioners voted to "withdraw the offer of employment to Simmons" and to authorize the prosecutor to contact Simmons regarding the commission's decision. The commissioners also authorized the DRC board to readvertise for the director's position. Couch said further information regarding Simmons' former employment had been sought and that information had not been received. "And, we have been unable to contact him," Couch said Thursday. "Between the initial hire offer and the original start date, we requested additional information from Mr. Simmons. We delayed his hiring start date two times and we have not heard back from him so we felt at this time it was best to reopen the position. We have to do our due diligence when hiring someone," Couch said. County officials were reluctant to discuss details of their previous closed door discussions publicly, but said they had not received documentation they had requested regarding employment-related issues that had been raised.Read more.
