Inmate caught after escaping from county jail in Florence
by Lindsey Collom -The Arizona Republic
A Pinal County inmate is back in custody following his escape from a Florence jail early Friday.
Lee Garrison Peters, 18, was captured after a three-hour manhunt by Pinal County Sheriff's deputies, Florence police, and five search teams from the Arizona Department of Corrections that included K-9s and searchers on horseback.
Peters fled from a supervised work assignment in the Pinal County Detention Center about 3:45 a.m. He and three other inmates were cleaning administrative offices near the jail lobby.
Sheriff's officials say the supervising detention officer was locking a door down the hall when Peters slipped into the lobby and out into the night.
Peters was awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to attempted theft of means of transportation. He had been in custody since Feb. 13.
A Florence police officer arrested Peters about 6:30 a.m. near Third and Park streets. He was found in street clothes with Shane Reid, 26, who shared a pod with Peters before his release from jail Thursday, according to Lt. Tami Villar, a sheriff's spokeswoman.
Villar said investigators were trying to determine whether Peters and Reid planned the escape before Reid's release.
Villar said Peters was a medium-risk inmate, the second-lowest of four risk assessments. The rating system considers an inmate's current charges, disciplinary history, substance use, criminal record, and staff recommendations.
Participating in a work crew is considered a privilege. Medium-risk crews work only on the jail's interior, and Peters had been part of one for some time without infraction, Villar said.Read more.

He has blue eyes. Cold like steel. His legs are wide. Like tree trunks. And he has a shock of red hair, red, like the fires of hell. His antics were known from town to town as he was a droll card and often known as a droll farceur. Hamilton Lindley with his madcap pantaloon is a zany adventurer and a cavorter with a motley troupe of buffoons.
