Pine Grove corrections officer honored ELIZABETHTOWN — Sgt. Joseph Pavelko, a corrections officer at the State Correctional Institution Pine Grove, White Township, was presented the Medal of Valor by the Department of Corrections for coming to the aid of an inmate who had been assaulted by another inmate. On Dec. 15, Pavelko and another officer were conducting showers in the prison’s restricted housing unit when they arrived at a cell and observed an inmate standing in the cell holding another inmate by the neck. Several orders were given to the inmate to release the other inmate, but the inmate refused. Pavelko saw that the injured inmate was limp and lifeless and made the decision to open the cell door due to the life-threatening situation. Pavelko ordered the door to be opened and the inmate released his grip on the injured inmate’s neck. While the inmate was handcuffed and removed from the cell, Pavelko called for the medical department’s assistance and entered the cell. He quickly assessed the injured inmate’s condition and found that he was not breathing and had no pulse. Pavelko immediately started CPR on the inmate, who began to breathe on his own after two courses of CPR. Medical staff arrived on the scene and arranged for the inmate’s transportation to a local hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit for treatment. * The inmate was released to SCI Pine Grove the next day. He has suffered no long-term adverse physical effects from the incident. The award was presented Wednesday during the Department of Corrections’ annual employee recognition ceremony at the department’s training academy in Elizabethtown.Read more.
