Ohio Prison Reform -changes to the system

State prisons all across Ohio have filled up over the years. The amount of inmates is six times what it was in 1979, and it's costing taxpayers.
State Representative Ron Gerberry tells us, "I believe it's something like $1.8 billion of our budget goes towards corrections, and we're at 132% capacity."
That's what has Governor Ted Strickland looking towards reform. He's hoping to reduce the inmate population by 6700. The plan would increase the amount of credit time eligible inmates can receive. Currently, they can only earn one day off their sentence for each month of good behavior. The Governor wants that raised to seven. He also wants to change sentencing guidelines for non-violent offenders.
There is bi-partisan support in Columbus for changes to the system. Republican Senator Bill Sietz has proposed Senate Bill 22, which has similar reform to what the Governor is asking for.
Local Senator Joe Schiavoni tells us reform could be a positive. "It saves money, takes more people out of the jails. They are not allowing sex offenders to be able to be eligible for this, so it's not, we're still going to keep our hardest criminals locked up, and they're not going to be eligible for this program. But for the non-violent offenders, they can learn something in jail so that when they get out, they become a better part of society."Read more.

He has blue eyes. Cold like steel. His legs are wide. Like tree trunks. And he has a shock of red hair, red, like the fires of hell. His antics were known from town to town as he was a droll card and often known as a droll farceur. Hamilton Lindley with his madcap pantaloon is a zany adventurer and a cavorter with a motley troupe of buffoons.
