MADISON TWP., Mich. - The names will remain the same but the two state prisons near Adrian will soon be run as a single facility to cut expenses. “We’re going to combine the two prisons into one facility,” said John Cordell, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections. The Gus Harrison Correctional Facility and Parr Highway Correctional Facility will keep their separate names, he said, but share a single administration and staff. No changes in the inmate populations at either facility are planned next year, Cordell said. In April, the Parr Highway facility held 1,122 inmates and the Gus Harrison facility had 1,062 inmates. The populations have changed little since they opened. The reorganization was planned as part of the department’s cost savings announced in Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s 2010 budget address on Feb. 12. The budget proposal called for $120 million in cuts to the Corrections Department through closing “several additional facilities.” The budget also called for saving $12 million through “operational efficiencies.” Combining the administration of the two prisons near Adrian involves “some consolidation of positions,” Cordell said. Control centers at the two facilities will be combined, and merging the administrations will involve captains, lieutenants, sergeants, assistant deputy wardens and deputy wardens, he said. Final decisions have not been made yet on what or how many command officer and administration positions will be eliminated, Cordell said. Those decisions are to be made and changes put in place before the start of the next fiscal year on Oct. 1, he said. Read more.
