| Kansas prison closing unit - budget cuts |

TOPEKA | The El Dorado Correctional Facility will close its minimum security North Unit by July 1 because of budgets cuts. Corrections Department Secretary Roger Werholtz said Tuesday the agency must cut $6 million in the fiscal year 2010 budget. He said closing the unit will save $1.2 million and the 102 inmates will be transferred to other locations. The department is in the process of placing inmates at several facilities, which has resulted in overcrowding in some places. Read more.
