| Deputy jobs will be saved |

MONTESANO — Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s deputies and support staff have agreed to reduce their wages and benefits in order to prevent the loss of two deputies. The county commissioners on Monday approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Teamsters Local Union No. 252 to reduce benefits and salaries of its employees. Sheriff Mike Whelan estimates the county will save nearly $78,000 in wages and benefits from the deputies, and another $15,000 from the support staff. Although the total savings don’t add up to the wages and benefits of two deputies the county had said it may lay off, County Commissioner Al Carter said the agreement between the union and the county is good enough to save the two positions. The deputies will give up holiday pay for two days, their employer match for deferred compensation (a kind of government 401 K plan), and a “Wellness Day,” typically awarded if a deputy doesn’t use sick time in a year. Support staff workers also agree to take 48 hours of unpaid time off between May 1 and Dec. 15. The agreements will be rescinded if the county lays off personnel. “We’re all happy to save these positions,” Whelan said. “I think the only people who won’t be happy are the crooks.” The sheriff, who was the only county employee not to take a raise last year because of the county’s budget issues, added that he’s optimistic federal economic stimulus dollars will come through for the county and allow him to restore the pay cuts and benefits reductions his employees took.
