Three correctional officers responding to an alarm sounded at a minimum-security support facility at Centinela Prison last Monday night suffered minor injuries after their car crashed into a fence.
The alarm at the support facility southwest of the institution was sounded at 8:35 p.m., said Centinela prison Public Information Officer Deavonne Long. The support facility is made up of two dormitory buildings surrounded by a 6-foot tall chain-link fence.
The alarm was sounded after an injured Hispanic inmate reported being assaulted by another inmate, said Long. The facility as a matter of procedure sounds its alarm at the occurrence of any disturbance because it is not as heavily staffed as the main prison complex, explained Long.
Three correctional officers from the main complex responded to the alarm by traveling to the facility in the private car of one of the officers, said Long. The officer who was driving failed to negotiate a curve leading into the facility, causing him to lose control and crash into the fence, added Long.
One of the officers suffered a strained neck, the second officer an abrasion to his right arm and the third officer a laceration to an elbow, said Long. The officers reportedly were taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center for treatment and they returned to duty last Tuesday.
Long was unable to say if the officers were wearing their seat belts.
The inmate who was injured in the assault reportedly suffered a laceration above his nose and was treated at the prison infirmary.
Long said another Hispanic inmate was identified as a possible suspect in the assault. Both inmates are reportedly being housed in administrative segregation pending an investigation.
