| Event evokes strong memories of brothers |

By RACHEL PUNCH, THE SUDBURY STAR It's the 10th anniversary of a ball tournament held in honour of Sgt. Rick McDonald and his brother Dan McDonald, but the memories of both tragic deaths are still fresh in the minds of organizers. "I don't believe it will ever get easier, but we never forget," said Randy Baldelli, a member of the organizing committee. "We just want to make sure that we have this memory of Danny and Rick carried on every year. "It keeps the memory of those two brothers, along with all other fallen officers and essential services workers, alive." Rick was 38 years old when he was killed July 28, 1999. He was hit while laying a spike belt across Highway 69 in Greater Sudbury to try and stop the driver of a stolen vehicle. Dan and widow Corinne Fewster started the Rick McDonald Memorial Ball Tournament 10 years ago in his honour. Then tragedy struck the McDonald family again. Dan, a corrections officer and manager at Sudbury District Jail, was killed in a traffic accident in April 2007. He was also 38. Friends and family members united together to form a committee to keep the tournament alive following Dan's death. Read more.
