Connecticut lawmaker wants wind turbines on prison grounds By Luther Turmelle, New Haven Register, Conn. NEW HAVEN, CONN.: State Rep. Mary Fritz, D-Wallingford, wants the Department of Correction to "think outside the box" when it comes to dealing with its energy needs. So, Frtiz has introduced legislation that if approvedwould require the department to apply for a grant from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund and launch a pilot program to erect wind power turbines at one of the state's prisons. The legislation was passed by the House of Representatives last week and is now being considered by the Senate. "This is an opportunity to generate free power from the wind," Fritz said. "And there are significant dollars in the federal stimulus package for alternative sources of energy." There are four Department of Correction facilities in Fritz's 90th House District, all in Cheshire. But Fritz said she didn't feel it was appropriate for her to decide at which correction facility the wind power program should be tested. Correction spokesman Andrius Banevicius said the agency's facilities management staff are always investigating possible locations for the turbines. " We have three members of our staff who are responsible for finding ways to conserve energy," Baneviciussaid."They have been able to reduce our energy cost by $600,000 over the previous fiscal year by using energy efficient lighting and other methods." The department is also exploring the possibility of using hydrogen power fuel cells at prison facilities, he said. "Our engineers met with officials from the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology to engage in preliminary discussions about using fuel cell technology."
