State inspectors pleased by Dallas County jail officials' efforts to fix faulty fire-safety system
By KEVIN KRAUSE / The Dallas Morning News
A team of state jail inspectors that showed up unannounced Monday at the Dallas County jails was pleased with the county's efforts to repair fire-safety systems in the highest-population jail tower, according to county officials.
The follow-up inspection from the Texas Commission on Jail Standards was anticipated, though county officials didn't know when it would occur.
In March, the county jails failed state inspection for the seventh straight time, in part because of faulty fire-safety systems in the north tower jail.
In early May, the jail commissioners stopped short of forcing the county to reduce the north tower's population by 928 inmates after county officials said temporary safeguards were in place.
But Sheriff Lupe Valdez decided a little more than a week ago to voluntarily move the inmates after internal tests revealed that the north tower's smoke detectors still were not working properly.
Commissioner John Wiley Price said 258 inmates have so far been moved out of the north tower.
The county had to reopen the Decker jail to accept some of those transfers. Officials closed the Decker jail in December to save money by consolidating jail operations at the Lew Sterrett Justice Center complex.
The county has so far replaced 215 of the 1,600 smoke detectors in the north tower jail, Price said. During tests Monday, those that were replaced detected smoke within the required timeframe, Price said.
"We're still having some detection problems," Price said. "It was nothing we didn't expect." He also said the inspectors were satisfied with a temporary smoke venting system that was set up in the north tower.Read more.
